Sustainable mining in South Africa

The mining industry is regarded as the one of the oldest sectors of the South African economy that affects daily life of many citizens continually, and in contrarily mining plays a major role in developing SA economy. Menar investment company holding as it has goal of enhancing journalistic knowledge, it had called mining experts across the globe to come and impart knowledge to journalists working in different media arena as they had seen that there is a dire need for media personnel’s to ensure that the mining industry is well presented by journalists in their reports.

On the last day of training journalists where given an opportunity to visit an operating mine in Khanye colliery located in Bronkhorspruit, Gauteng. The journalists meet with General Manager Guy Thompson, who explained about how the mine gets going and the challenges that they encounter during technical application of their mining explosives and combustion.   

Guy Thompson acknowledged that, there is a neighbouring chicken farm of which they always take responsibility to not endanger their farming project and some untouchable national monument that they found them there during the commencement of Khanye colliery  in 2017.

In giving back Khanye mine helped the neighbouring community by hiring almost 384 employees of which 51 are females to eradicate unemployment rate in the area.

In presentation outlined by Bongani Motsa senior economist from Mineral Council of South Africa, the department of minerals resources (DMR) has added R20 billion in the Council of Geo Science to embark on planning that will take 10 years to encourage investment in the future of mining. Without mining government and the SARB would not be in a position to service foreign debt; as an economy it would be hard to import vital inputs and technologies to spur growth.
