Head of Environmental Compliance

JOB PURPOSE

The incumbent will be responsible for effectively managing and leading the Environmental Compliance Team of the organisation.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitor the Company’s environmental performance against internal and external compliance targets

  • Carry out environmental audits and assessments

  • Developing, implementing and driving environmental strategies and policies

  • Communicate with key stakeholders regarding environmental performance/issues

  • Report on environmental audits and make recommendations for future strategies

  • Build awareness of environmental legislation and identify and lead to the prevention of any potential contravention of regulations and consent compliance

  • Keep up to date with the latest environmental legislation

  • Promote awareness of the impact of environmental decisions across the Company

  • Build relationships with external environmental service providers

  • Represent the Company in public meetings and consultations in relation to environmental matters

  • Lead environmental investigations for significant incidents

  • Prepare environmental permits, licences and exemptions when necessary

  • Report on findings, recommendations and corrective actions to mitigate environmental hazards across the various environmental sites 

  • Train and develop staff members as well as provide mentorship and development to the team

  • Good understanding environmental liability / financial provision requirements for all mining operations in line with the relevant legislative.

  • Report on departmental performance at Executive level

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • A Post-Graduate Degree in Environmental Management or related degree that is essential for this position.

  • At least 10 years’ experience in a similar role with demonstratable results in complex environmental issues within the mining industry.

  • Must have dealt with the Department and Minerals Resources and Energy, Department of Water and Sanitation and other governmental departments for at least 5 years.

  • Strong report writing and presentation skills

  • Previous experience in managing and leading the Environmental team and managing cross functional relationships.

  • Valid driver license

  • Must have the ability to work under pressure and deliver according to agreed timelines

  • Interpersonal skills to motivate and involve people.

  • Good verbal and written communication ability.

  • The successfully candidate must be computer literate and ideally have experience working with various environmental programmes

  • Must have strong leadership, resilience, knowledge and commercial know-how to be able to leader from the front.

  • Strong negotiation skills
